How to cut FX costs on international payroll
Five practical ways to stop losing margin on every cross-border salary run.

If your team is spread across countries, every payroll run quietly leaks money. Banks bury a margin of 2–4% inside the exchange rate, then add transfer fees on top. On a $200,000 monthly payroll, that can be $80,000 a year.
1. Know your real exchange rate
Compare the rate you’re charged against the mid-market rate on the day. The gap is the hidden fee. Most teams have never measured it.

2. Hold balances in the currencies you pay
Multi-currency accounts let you convert once, at a good moment, instead of every pay day. Pair them with rate alerts and you stop buying currency at the worst time of the month.
Teams that hold balances in their payroll currencies save an average of 1.8% per run.
3. Lock rates before you pay
A rate lock gives you a guaranteed price for a short window, so the amount you approve is the amount your people receive — no surprises between approval and settlement.

Rate locks hold your price for 30 seconds while you approve.
“We were losing a junior salary every year to exchange rates and never noticed.”

Start with the audit in step one. Most teams find enough savings in the first month to justify the switch on their own.
